NECAP จจ We are the affiliate of NASAP for the six New England states: Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. We were formed and officially recognized in December, 2008, by NASAP, the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology.

Our Statement of Purpose: The purpose of the New England Community of Adlerian Psychology (NECAP) is to promote the teachings, theories, and counseling strategies of Dr. Alfred Adler’s “Individual Psychology,” to provide a welcoming community for all persons who are interested in the psychology of Dr. Alfred Adler, and to establish forms of communication to knit this community together.

New England has a rich history of Adlerian interest and leadership. Vermont was home to Heinz and Rowena Ansbacher until their recent deaths. Their several books on Adler have become classics in the field and the necessary core for any Adlerian's library. The two were introduced to each other by Dr. Alfred Adler in Vienna, Austria, when they were students there.

Dr. William Nicoll, director of the Adlerian Training Institute, Port St. Lucie, Florida, was first a native New Englander and reminisced briefly in an email: "I was born and raised in the greater Boston [Boylston] area, first job in Ipswich public schools then Portsmouth, NH., graduate of the University of New Hampshire, then Boston University, and on faculty at the University of Maine for a year." He remembers Adlerian summer training programs at the University of Vermont, led by the Ansbachers as well as Bill Marchant, Oscar Christensen, and Rudolph Dreikurs in late 60's.

NECAP also boasts as Honorary Members Dr. Becky LaFountain (NASAP executive director in Hershey, PA); popular lecturer and workshop leader Dr. Wes Wingett; and Dr. Al Milliren (NASAP president-elect for 2009-2010). Indeed, almost as soon as we had formed, Dr. Nicoll and Dr. Milliren offered to speak, lead workshops or classes, etc., gratis when NECAP holds its first conference!

At present we have this web site and an occasional newsletter with quarterly ambitions. We hope to hold meetings and eventually annual conferences.
